THE TEAM
YAU Wai-chi (Janet)
Producer
Janet Yau‘s exploration in arts administration started when she was studying at University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) for her master’s degree in Ethnomusicology. She assisted Prof. Judy Mitoma of Department of World Arts and Cultures in organising the World Festival of Sacred Music – the largest world music festival that takes place every 3 years in Los Angeles. She witnessed not only the exquisite artistry of artists from all-over the world, but also how performing arts could foster mutual understanding and respect among people. Since then, she dedicated herself to bringing high quality performances to the community. Upon graduation, Yau continued to work at the UCLA Centre for Intercultural Performance and assisted the marketing and logistics of the Center’s international exchange and artists’ residency projects.
Yau returned to Hong Kong in 2006. Over the years, she has worked, full-time at or on project-base with, City Contemporary Dance Company, Cultural Presentations Section of LCSD, Premiere Performances of Hong Kong, Hong Kong Arts Festival, SingFest and Musicus Society, among others. Through being the producer of various programmes, ranging from educational training, concert performance to community concert at heritage site, she has consistently realised her dream of making performing arts accessible to the public.
Yau also has extensive experience in editorial and translation, specialising in publications for Western classical music and academic articles for Chinese instrumental composition. Working partners have included the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, International Association of Theatre Critics (Hong Kong) and Hong Kong String Orchestra. In addition, she hosts music educational talk for secondary students and world music radio programme, and is a DJ for Argentine tango milonga.
Born and raised in Hong Kong, Janet Yau started learning the piano and violin since a young age. After graduating from The Chinese University of Hong Kong with a Bachelor of Arts degree in music, she received a scholarship to study abroad at UCLA. Her graduate thesis on music and identity was presented at the 50th Annual Conference of Society for Ethnomusicology.
